Shane Lux is a Canadian owner at Disney's Saratoga Springs Resort and Spa. His family usually books Grand Californian 1-Bedroom villas at the 7-month mark. Their track record for getting this booked for 10/13 years has been incredible. (The family chose other resorts for a few years). The secret to his method is to book immediately when the window opens at the 7-month mark, pick an off-peak time to go, such as January and choose a 1-Bedroom villa as they are the last to sell out.
Shane saves a lot of money on vacation using the kitchen of a DVC villa. From a budgeting perspective, they simplify vacation budgeting because you always have to eat. By taking utilizing their weekly food budget and buying groceries on vacation. Shane also uses Air Miles to cover most flight expenses from Canada to Los Angeles. Using Air Miles, Shane only has to pay applicable flight fees and taxes. His program also allows him to purchase 5-day park tickets using air miles. Historically, Disney has always let them convert their park tickets to annual passes for about $200-$250 US dollars. While we're a big fan of Lyn Metler's Families Fly Free program, it sounds like Shane has been leveraging the same principles of using credit card points to convert to airmiles and make their Disney vacations more affordable.
