Steve shares how he went from being a cash stay traveler to being a DVC member, how he and his wife navigate wheelchair-accessible accommodations in DVC, and the pros/cons to buying resale vs. direct. Episode 170
After 10 years of Disney trips in cash rooms, Steve and his family bought into DVC in 2019. They purchased a small direct contract of 75 points at Animal Kingdom Lodge, thinking they would be able to stay a week in a value studio. Steve's wife uses a wheelchair, and they quickly found that the value rooms were not ADA accessible. Their DVC guide felt terrible about this oversight, so he gave them lots of free fast passes on their next stay and upgraded them to a Treehouse at Saratoga Springs for that stay. Add on itis hit quickly and Steve picked up another 75 points at Animal Kingdom to be sure that they would have enough points to get the room that would accommodate the wheelchair.
After staying in a few different resorts over the last couple of years, Steve and his wife have experienced some better options for ADA accessibility and some not-so-great options. They loved the Treehouse, found the beds at Grand Floridian to be too high to transfer from the wheelchair to bed, and also experienced trouble with mobility on the Boardwalk hallways with the dense carpet.
As a blue card owner, Steve turned the tables on Chad and put him in the hot seat to answer questions about the benefits of owning direct vs. resale points. A very lively discussion ensued on the best ways to utilize points, how to rent points effectively and how to determine when “flipping points” might make sense. For spreadsheet nerds, this episode gets in the weeds! They also covered room views at Aulani, some of the best places to watch fireworks at Magic Kingdom, and Steve's bucket list of DVC stays.
